“Go ahead, make my day…”

Visitors to the Avoca Painting School were greeted with the aroma of freshly baked waffles. This was the only waffling going on as Rod got down to serious business of demonstrating his palette knife technique. In a thoroughly informal atmosphere Rod fielded questions for his guests while continuing to illustrate the various uses for the palette knife. The skull made a curious “still life” and irony wasn’t wasted on the interested onlookers. Many who weren’t sure about the still life were sure they liked the finished painting. Rod videoed the whole session and it will be appearing on youtube very soon.

April Outdoor Painting Workshops

The sun shone for two beautiful days of plein-air painting at Glendalough and Kilmacurragh Arboretum.
Rod started each day with a demonstration to ease his students into a groove after which they finally got their brushes wet. The morning’s painting was a relaxed atmosphere followed by a picnic lunch under blue skies. Rod’s students were treated to a palette knife demonstration before they started their own pieces for the afternoon. Everyone took home finished canvasses an a whole new experience at the end of the day.

Impressions of Impressionists

Edward Monet was the starting point for this week’s class. The exercise was to study the French master’s style through working from an impressionist landscape painting. Students painted their own versions after watching Rod demonstrate first. While the rain fell out doors it was all sunshine in the studio. The results were both exciting and enlightening with regard to that infamous painting genre. Rod: “it’s been super mornings work”.

Letting the Paint Run

Rod Coyne gave classes today at the Avoca Painting School in “How to really let loose”
His students learned about letting the paint run and melting the image on the canvas.
All students were delighted with the exciting results.
